Morrisons Shine with Lumenal LED Shelf Lighting
Lumenal, the specialists in energy efficient LED lighting solutions have conducted a UK wide shelf lighting retrofit for leading supermarket, Morrisons. The Lumenal high performing Velorum LED luminaire, specifically designed for illuminating shelving units, replaces the previously installed T5 fluorescent lamps as part of the supermarkets refit of the home wares department 'Your Home'. The retro fit was required to improve energy efficiency whilst eliminating the problems associated with the fluorescent installation including regular lamp failures, high maintenance costs and ineffectively lit merchandise.
The Morrisons installation has delivered an energy reduction from 21W to 15W per shelf luminaire and has been be rolled out through 150 stores with around 50 shelves per store. What's more, the luminaires provide this increased efficiency while delivering enhanced light quality. Product merchandising has benefited significantly from the shelving's improved illumination, attributable to Velorum's higher quality output, offering a higher lux level, as well as uniform distribution of light and increased consistency, both in terms of colour temperature and brightness.
Velorum luminaires have also offered Morrisons greater flexibility in terms of merchandising. Owing to dimensional constraints, the fluorescent lamps fell short of the ends of shelves, leaving some merchandise unlit, a factor associated with a decrease in sales. In contrast, the Velorum luminaires were made to fit specific shelving lengths, thereby ensuring that all products are illuminated, once more to optimise merchandising.
The slim line nature of the Velorum fitting allows installation at the front of shelves rather than at a middle depth where the fluorescents once were, therefore illuminating the front face of products as well as the top. This is further assisted by the directed beam, which allows all light to be directed onto merchandise, rather than being emitted, and largely wasted, at 360, as with the fluorescent fittings previously utilised.
In addition to its energy efficiency, Velorum delivers Morrisons a carbon saving, lowering the supermarket's carbon footprint in terms of its disposal. LED lighting is mercury free unlike fluorescent lighting which is difficult and expensive to dispose of.
This commitment to reducing energy consumption throughout its stores sees Morrisons making huge headway in its estate. With over 100,000 illuminated shelves over the whole Morrisons estate, realising the energy savings offered by installing LED lighting is very significant.
